What I Wore

How to Dress for the 4th of July (or any holiday) Without Being Obvious

As a child when it came to dressing for holidays I went with my instincts. For Christmas it was head to toe red with sparkly tights and/or shoes. When it was the 4th of July, I wanted to show that I was just as patriotic as the next person. My outfits were an homage to the American flag, red, white, blue and more sparkles.

As an adult dressing for holidays has become a little trickier. Iwant to look fun and festive but also stylish. This year for the 4th I wore all three colors associated with the holiday but not in equal proportions. A blue and white striped button-down and denim Levi’s shorts seemed like classic choices to me. I added a red bandana for a pop of color and to add a little patriotic motif. I chose muted colors to avoid looking busy and distracting from the classic style of my look. I added oxfords because why not?? The shoes lend polish to and outfit.

If you’re a minimalist, dressing for holidays without being obvious may be an easy task for you. But always remember that holidays are meant to be fun. If you’re down for getting decked out in your most festive attire -go for it! Just know that there are alternatives if that isn’t your style.
