What I Wore

Wear Prints like a Pro

I could literally create 10 posts on mixing prints. It never gets tiresome. I was really daring and decided to wear not 1, not 2, but three different prints in this outfit. Most of the time I think people try to avoid working with too many prints, as not to overwhelm everyone’s sensory with loud clashing prints. I think most people are unknowingly naturals at mixing prints.  It can be as simple as wearing a dress with a flower print with a striped bag or leopard winter gloves with a plaid coat.

Mix prints like a pro with these tips:

  1.  Some prints can be worn as solids. If you have a print of a small-scale it can be considered as a solid and be used to build your outfit. Think of polka dots, stripes and even floral. The key is to make sure that they are small and almost undetectable at a glance to make it work.
  2. Choose prints that play nicely together and compliment each other; meaning they can be the same pattern but in varying scales. The commonality should be color; making sure to stay in the same color family.
  3. Spread your prints throughout your outfit. Incorporating prints throughout your look is an easy way to make sure that you aren’t using too many prints or if you want to play it safe. Try wearing prints on your top and shoes, even in your accessories. You don’t need to wear print from head to toe. I’d say 3 prints is the cut off. I was just shy of overdoing it.
